There's a version of the pro basketball dream that lives in highlight reels — game winners, championship confetti, sold-out gyms in cities you've never heard of. Then there's the real version: months without a paycheck, a new language every year, and the slow, uncomfortable work of becoming someone tough enough to make it all the way through.
Patrick Rembert has lived the real version for 15 professional seasons across 18 countries, most recently suiting up in the Uganda Summer League. In this installment of #VoicesFromTheCourt
's series spotlighting the athletes who've built careers in the game's less-visible corners, Patrick shares his story in his own words — how it started, what nearly broke him, and what he's carrying into his next chapter.
Who Is Patrick Rembert?
Patrick Rembert is a professional basketball player from Long Beach, California, with 15 seasons of experience spanning 18 countries — most recently competing in theUganda Summer League. Since signing his first contract in Slovenia after college, he's built a career defined not by trophies but by longevity, adaptability, and resilience through the unpredictable realities of playing overseas.
Off the court, Patrick has spent the past decade quietly helping fellow players find opportunities abroad, without ever taking a commission. He's now channeling that same passion into his next chapter as a sports agent.
In His Words:"Traveling the world while playing the game I love."
After graduating from college, Patrick had no shortage of interest — multiple agents reached out, all wanting to help launch his professional career. Once he found the right fit, he signed his first contract in Slovenia, officially kicking off a journey that would take him across 18 countries over the next decade and a half.
But the reality of playing overseas didn't match the picture in his head.
"Like a lot of players, I had this idea of what playing professionally overseas would be like. What I didn't fully understand was how much I would have to grow as a person. The biggest lesson early on was learning to get comfortable being uncomfortable."
That lesson hit home fast. Patrick remembers arriving in a small village for one of his early stops and realizing, all at once, just how far from home he really was.
"Everything was different — the language, the culture, the food, and even the pace of life. You either adapted or you struggled."
The Turning Point
Every long career has a hinge moment, and for Patrick, his came from an honest look in the mirror.
"The biggest turning point in my career came when I realized I simply wasn't working hard enough to reach the level I wanted to play at. Once I raised my standards, my career took another step forward."
The Real Opponent Wasn't on the Court
Ask most overseas veterans what the hardest part of the job is, and the answer often has nothing to do with basketball. For Patrick, it was survival off the court.
"The toughest challenge I dealt with overseas wasn't basketball — it was going months without getting paid by clubs. It taught me resilience and the importance of managing my finances."
The Accomplishment He's Most Proud Of
Fifteen years in, Patrick doesn't point to a trophy when asked what he's most proud of. He points to the length of the road itself.
"The accomplishment I'm most proud of isn't a championship. It's building a successful 15-year career across 18 countries when many people never believed I could."
Lessons Learned
Patrick's biggest takeaways for players considering — or already living — the overseas grind:
1. Choose Your Agent Carefully
Your agent opens doors that talent alone can't always open. Take your time and choose someone who genuinely has your best interests at heart.
2. Learn to Manage Your Money Early
Many early-career teams struggle with consistent payments. Don't spend every paycheck assuming another one is coming next week — budget for delays and protect yourself financially.
Closing Thoughts
Patrick's advice to anyone weighing a career overseas is simple, but it comes from someone who's actually lived it:
"If you're thinking about playing overseas, do it because you truly love the game. There will be incredible highs and difficult lows, and you have to be mentally prepared for both. Most importantly, enjoy the journey because it goes by faster than you think."
As for what's next, Patrick's already been laying the groundwork for years. For the past decade, he's quietly helped players connect with opportunities without taking a commission — simply because he wanted to help.
"Now I'm excited to turn that passion into the next phase of my career."
His next chapter: Becoming a sports agent, and passing forward everything 18 countries taught him.
